Contact lens fittings

Multifocal lenses

A multifocal lens has more than one power zone, so one lens can help with near and far. The doctor chooses the design for your work and hobbies.

Who it is for

  • Adults who need help with reading and distance, often from their 40s

  • Contact lens wearers who now hold their phone farther away

  • People who don't want to switch between glasses and lenses

  • Anyone curious about monovision

At the visit

What happens at the fitting

  1. 01

    Step 1: Exam and measurements

About 45 minutes. We check near and far vision, and ask what you read, drive and look at most.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Pick a design

The doctor chooses a lens design and may suggest monovision, where each eye is set for a different distance.

  3. 03

Step 3: Trial pair at home

Wear the pair through your real week. Read a menu, check your phone, drive at dusk. Write down what is hard.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Check visit

Bring your notes. The doctor adjusts the power or the design, and you try again before anything is ordered.

Results vary. Some people adapt in days, and some need a second design.

Before you come

Billing and what to bring

  • How it is billed

The exam goes to the plan that pays for it, and the fitting, the trial pair and the lenses are quoted separately. The front desk checks your benefits before the visit and gives you a written estimate if you pay yourself.

    How fees work
  • What to bring

Your current glasses and any contact lenses, with the cases. Your vision plan and medical insurance cards. A photo ID. A list of what you read and drive.

Questions

Questions about multifocal lenses

Will I still need reading glasses?

Maybe, for some tasks or in dim light. The doctor tells you what to expect for your eyes and your week.

What is monovision?

One eye is set for distance and the other for near. Some people like it and some don't, and the doctor can let you try it.

What if the first design doesn't work?

That is what the trial pair is for. We change the design at your check visit, and you try again before you order.
