Contact lens fittings

Specialty lenses

Gas permeable, hybrid and scleral lenses are made for corneas that soft lenses don't fit well, such as an irregular cornea or keratoconus.

Who it is for

  • People with an irregular cornea, including keratoconus

  • Wearers whose soft lenses haven't worked

  • People with a high or complex prescription

  • Anyone the doctor has recommended a rigid lens to

At the visit

What happens at the fitting

  1. 01

Step 1: Exam and corneal mapping

About an hour. We map the shape of the front of your eye and check its health.

  2. 02

    Step 2: First lens

The doctor picks a lens, such as a scleral lens that vaults over the cornea, and checks how it rests on your eye.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Trial and adjustments

You wear a trial lens, then return so the doctor can adjust the fit. Several visits are common.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Training and follow-up

An assistant teaches you to insert, remove and clean the lenses. Check visits keep the fit up to date.

Results vary. Specialty fittings take time, and the doctor explains the plan at the first visit.

Before you come

Billing and what to bring

  • How it is billed

The exam goes to the plan that pays for it, and the fitting, the trial pair and the lenses are quoted separately. The front desk checks your benefits before the visit and gives you a written estimate if you pay yourself.

    How fees work
  • What to bring

Your current glasses and any lenses you wear, with the cases. Your vision plan and medical insurance cards. Any records from other eye doctors. A photo ID.

Questions

Questions about specialty lenses

Is a specialty fitting billed to medical insurance?

Sometimes. When the doctor documents a medical reason for the lens, a medical plan may pay for part of it. We check your plan before the visit.

Are scleral lenses hard to wear?

Most people need practice putting them in and taking them out. We teach you, and the check visits tune the fit.

How long does a specialty fitting take?

More visits than a soft lens. The doctor gives you the plan at the first exam.

  • Sudden vision loss, flashes of light, a curtain over your vision, a chemical splash or an eye injury needs care now. Call our office right away or go to an emergency room. If you can't reach us, call 911.
